Violet Evergarden the Movie opens to 176.4% more revenue than Side-Story last year
Kyoto Animation's Violet Evergarden the Movie finally opened up in Japanese theaters on the September 18 Silver Week holiday weekend, doing very well for the sequel to the 2018 TV anime series, bringing in more box office revenue than the previous film, Violet Evergarden: Spin-Off - Eternity and Auto Memory Doll -, and tracking higher than A Silent Voice and K-ON! the Movie over their three-day opening weekends versus Violet Evergarden's five-day opening weekend.
Violet Evergarden the Movie opened behind Tenet to claim the number 2 spot for the weekend. Tenet opened in many more theaters than Violet Evergarden the Movie and had the higher ticket priced IMAX screenings to help push it to the number 1 spot.
Thanks to opening in more theaters than Violet Evergarden: Spin-Off - Eternity and Auto Memory Doll -, Violet Evergarden the Movie was able to attract 390,000 people to the cinema, bringing in a total of 559 million yen (US$5.32 million) at the Japanese box office in the first 5 days after release. To compare, Eternity and Auto Memory Doll brought in 831 million yen (US$7.9 million) during its run in total. This would make Violet Evergarden the Movie one of the best opening weekends for Kyoto Animation to date with a per screen average of around 1.64 million yen (US$15,604).
Violet Evergarden the Movie opened in Japanese theaters on September 18, there's no word yet on a western release.
